”Synergy Between Experiments and Theory in Rheology”, the Amherst rheology course ARC 08, June 3-4, 2008

Location :Amherst, Mass., USA

Lecturers are Ronald Larson (U Michigan), Jonathan Rothstein (U Massachusetts), and H. Henning Winter (U Massachusetts). They will introduce basic concepts (experiments, theory) of rheology and also perform tutorials with the entire group. Teaching tool for the tutorials is Rheo-Hub, a computer platform for integrating experiments with theory in rheology The short course will build on the new teaching tools for rheology that became available with the IRIS rheology software. Short lectures on rheology will be combined with hands-on tutorials (…)

Postdoc position at University of Minnesota (USA)

Applicants are sought for a postdoctoral position involving the mathematical modeling of melt-blowing processes for nanofiber production. This position, which will be based in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota, is part of an industrially supported project jointly supervised by Profs. Satish Kumar, Chris Macosko, and Frank Bates. Applicants should have a strong background and interest in theoretical/computational fluid dynamics, and a willingness to actively interact with experimentalists and industrial researchers. Opportunities exist to draw upon and integrate a number of different aspects of transport phenomena including interfacial fluid mechanics, rheology, and heat transfer. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of renewal for another year. Interested applicants should send a CV and the names of two references to Prof. Satish Kumar at kumar@cems.umn.edu.

PostDoc Positions at University of Southern Mississippi (USA)

Two post-doctoral positions are available immediately in a major research program in the general area of polymer science and engineering. The successful candidates will carry out research of fundamental nature, related to rheology of response-driven polymeric films, nanostructured organic/inorganic polymer hybrids, and of the development of adequate characterization strategies of same. Critical issues of connection of polymer film rheology and morphology, molecular and interfacial interactions, will be of interest. Strong mathematical and experimental skills, and the interest to learn new skills are required. The successful candidate must have a PhD in polymer engineering, chemical engineering, physics, or materials science,. A strong motivation toward creative research in the polymer field is highly desirable. A description of our research programme can be found on http://www.usm.edu/polymer.

The successful candidates will join an active research team of graduate and post-doctoral students involved in both the experimental and theoretical aspects of polymer science and engineering. The project is part of a NSF-supported Materials Research Science and Engineering Center on Response Driven Polymeric Films.
